How to check your report's AI score before Turnitin

You can't run Turnitin on your own report, but you can get a decent estimate before you submit. Use a checker that reads your file the way Turnitin does, see which lines are flagged, and fix those.

Why this is a problem

Turnitin is bought by colleges, not students. Most of us only see the AI score after submitting, when the guide shares the report. By then there's no time to change anything.

What Turnitin actually looks at

It only counts normal paragraphs. Tables, bullet points, headings, code and the reference list are skipped. The AI % is the share of those paragraphs it thinks AI wrote. If the score is between 1% and 19% it doesn't show a number at all, just *%.

How I'd do it

  1. Take the exact file you're going to submit, Word or PDF.
  2. Upload it to a checker that skips the same parts Turnitin skips. PaperCheck does that and judges the text in roughly 250-word chunks, like Turnitin.
  3. Look at where the flagged lines are. Usually it's the intro, literature review and conclusion.
  4. Rewrite those parts with things only you know: your numbers, what you built, what went wrong.
  5. Check the new version again before submitting.

How close can it get

No outside tool can copy Turnitin exactly. I tested PaperCheck against real Turnitin reports it had never seen, and it was off by about 12 percentage points on average. Use it as a warning, not a guarantee.

Common questions

Can I check my Turnitin AI score before submitting?

Not with Turnitin itself, unless your college allows draft submissions. You can use a checker that estimates it and shows which lines are likely to get flagged.

Does Turnitin check tables and references for AI?

No. It only looks at normal paragraphs.
